Another year, another XFest. And the muggy, sunless atmosphere was no deterrent for the hundreds of rock fans that descended upon the Lenoir County Fairgrounds Oct. 11 either dodging or creating mosh mayhem.
Sadly for some, this year there were no competitions featuring chicks and baby oil or BMX expos, but luckily the bands — all local and nationally-touring acts — kept the festival alive with almost constant entertainment.
While we were shielding our cameras from stray flying beach balls, concert goers were doing their part to boost our region's economy by spending their pay on $4 beers and an array of food served in dog bowls. Fans were just as ready to party at the Cheerwine Local 99 Exhibition Stage just as much as with the big boys at the Hooligan's Main Stage.
Highlights from the main stage
Airiel Down's frontman Beaux Foy quickly stripped off his jersey and spent lots of time working the crowd before giving a touching tribute to U.S. troops.
Atlantic Beach's Decyfer Down continued to break stereotypes against faith-based bands, but took one moment to remind the fans: “We don't wanna preach, but God loves you.”
Saving Abel, gave their all throughout their set, and sent the crowd into a frenzy when they played their hit “Addicted.”
Jared Weeks' matching his star belt with his star tattoo showed an impressive ability to accessorize.
After no-pictures-please Buckcherry sent the fairgrounds bumping with their extended “Crazy Bitch” finale, the show continued on within the crowd, as everyone suddenly realized Sparks has 7% alcohol.
But by 5:30 p.m. most people were in their vehicles, leaving behind the last-minute drunken brawls and the overweight, topless woman. (I wonder what happened to her ...)
Be sure to keep an eye on Foundry, Sin For The Fallen, Kill Mercy, and Irvine from the local stage, as you'll surely be seeing a lot more of them soon.
