The National Rifle is a punk-influenced indie rock-type band out of Philadelphia, Pa., that this month is making its seventh of eighth Greenville appearance because, band members say, “we have an awesome time whenever we're there.”

The band, consisting of Hugh Morretta, Lynna Stancato, Jeremiah Sweeney, Buddy Mazzenga, have played with Mute Math, 100 Monkeys and The Pharmacy, are performing at 8 p.m. Nov. 6 at Live with Greenville natives Future Islands. Cost is $10 at the door.

But before they made their way back to Eastern N.C., they took some time to collaboratively answer some questions in our Music Box. Visit www.thenationalrifle.com for more info on the band:

What current artist(s) do you think doesn't get enough credit for their work?

This might sound a little self centered but I think that there's an incredible number of awesome bands in Philly that get no national attention right now. Really just some great sounds coming out of the area by some incredible people including The New Connection, Cheers Elephant, Big Attack and Born Pilot. It seems like everyone's really focusing on whatever sound their synthesizer and samplers are making right now and not the awesome rock talent that's out there.

What's beneficial about men and women working together in bands? Any downfalls?

I'm not sure if there's anything good about having both sexes in a band. Haha ... I mean, I don't think that having a woman or a man brings a much needed masculine or feminine touch. Now, when you talk about negative sides it could be said that men and women don't often communicate with each other well and I think that could be true. I don't want to piss anyone off but it might seem sometimes like Lynna (our keyboardist/singer) has no idea where we're coming from and we definitely don't understand her. Haha.

How important is an online presence to bands in 2010?

Online presence is all a band has is 2010. There's nothing else. No TV. No commercial radio. There's college radio but only a small group of people have access to it. As far as national outlets, the internet is the only option. Not only is it the only way for us to communicate with fans and venues as well as sell our music but it's also the only way to spread the word through videos, blogs and our social network sites. I think it's more important now to have people talking about you online then to have any sort of label support. Labels only offer you a loan that you could probably get from your parents. You can't buy internet buzz.

What/who will be big in Fall 2010?

That's tough one. A lot of people are talking about this Menomena album. It has an unusual intensity so that it rocks in a really weird way and it's kind of growing on me. It came out this last summer and I think it'll be a sleeper hit.

What hopes do you have for music in 2011?

I hope that loud music will be cool again. I don't think it's been cool for at least 10 years in independent music circles and it's gotten to this point where guitars aren't cool either. I guess that goes hand in hand. I'm both a guitar and loud music lover so I'd be very happy if being angry becomes cooler then being sad.
