A list of museums and galleries in the Greenville and Pitt County area.

Greenville Museum of Art

The Greenville Museum of Art’s history began in 1935 when the first Women’s Club Arts Festival was held.

A permanent facility opened in 1939. In 1959, the East Carolina Art Society purchased the Flanagan Home, the museum’s current location, at 802 Evans St.

Wellington B. Gray
Gallery

The Wellington B. Gray Gallery is located on the East Carolina University campus in the Jenkins Fine Arts Building.

The gallery holds several exhibitions each year including the School of Art and Design undergraduate and graduate exhibitions.

In addition, the gallery has amassed several collections, including Baltic ceramics, prints by American painter and sculptor Larry Rivers, and African art.

Pitt County Arts Council
at Emerge

The Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge is a nonprofit art center serving the local arts community with outreach programs through Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Juvenile Justice System and Pitt County Schools. The council also offers a variety of art classes throughout the year for adults and children with scholarships available for students in need.

PCAC at Emerge has two gallery spaces and several classes rooms for the visual arts. Workshops and classes are held throughout the years as well as a variety of exhibitions. Memberships are available.

The first Friday of each month, PCAC at Emerge will participate in Uptown Greenville’s First Friday ArtWalks from 6-9 p.m.

City Art Gallery

City Art Gallery is a commercial gallery that features exhibitions by local, regional and national artists approximately once a month.

InkStone Gallery

InkStone Gallery is a commercial gallery that features exhibitions of contemporary crafts by North Carolina artists with an emphasis on functional clay, fiber, glass, stone, wood, watercolor, sumi-e and American folk art.

InkStone is at 180 Depot St., Winterville. Hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays. Call 231-7173.

Other galleries

Grifton Historical Museum of Area Culture — Focusing on displays of tobacco- and farming-related exhibits from the early 1900s, it’s in the Grifton Civic Center, 202 Creekshore Drive, Grifton. Open by appointment. Call 524-4708.

May Museum and Park — The general-history museum of Farmville and western Pitt County, it’s located at 213 S. Main St. Open from noon-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. Group tours are available anytime with prior appointment. Call 753-5814.

Mendenhall Student Center Gallery — Work by national and North Carolina artists, in addition to East Carolina University staff and faculty.

The gallery is inside the Mendenhall Student Center on the ECU campus. Call 328-4700.

Uptown Art Supply & Gallery — Displays work by local and regional artists is at 529 S. Evans St. Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Call 752-0688.

Winterville Historical and Arts Museum — With more than 1,500 artifacts donated by more than 100 people, the story of the town of Winterville is told. By appointment only. Call 321-2660.
