The process of hiring a replacement for the outgoing city manager will be the most important action the City Council will handle during its term, according to an adviser assisting the council.
The council met in a special session Monday at City Hall to decide its next steps to replace Wayne Bowers, who announced his retirement effective March 1. Councilwoman Marion Blackburn was not present due to a death in her family.
Hartwell Wright of the N.C. League of Municipalities told the members and Mayor Allen Thomas at the informal session that despite its need to complete the process as quickly as possible, they should act with deliberation and care.
