The Pitt County Board of Education will discuss filling an open seat when it meets tonight at 7 in the second-floor auditorium at the county office complex on Fifth Street.
Seat 1A has been empty since the unexpected death of board member Matthew Ward on Jan. 15. State law requires the board to appoint a replacement to serve until the next school board election in 2014.
Ward was appointed in August 2010 to fill a vacancy left by the death of previous District 1A representative Michael Dixon. At that time, the board accepted applications from District 1 residents and interviewed all four candidates in a special open session before selecting Ward.
