Greenville’s dream of growing a thriving recreation and park system calls for all the financial management skills its planners have at their disposal. But the city might need more to bring the dream to reality, the system director said this week.
Recreation and Parks Department Director Gary Fenton, now in his fifth year at the department’s helm, will report Monday to the City Council on efforts to combine private and nonprofit fundraising efforts with available city and state grant funds for completion of Phase 1 of the Dream Park project, approved in January by the council.
Those efforts are a good example of the kind of resource management required to provide healthy recreational outlets for all portions of the city’s diverse population. They also illustrate the kinds of challenges that keep some people wondering what it takes to meet their neighborhood’s recreational needs.
