A coalition of union representatives and local civil rights groups went to the Greenville Public Works Department on Wednesday to express support for Greenville public employees.
The group, calling itself The Coalition to Support Greenville City Workers, said the city employees, who are expected to participate Saturday in a public hearing, are dissatisfied with their working conditions and frustrated by their inability to conduct meaningful discussions with their managers about work-related issues.
“We hope the hearing will help the workers solve some of the problems they are facing, and we call upon the city to create a just and fair working environment for those who provide quality services to the city,” union organizer Ashaki Binta said.

They must be confused
After the airing of grievances, shouldn't they be having the feats of strength? Nice of COR and NAACP to have a Festivus gathering, but they need to pick the right date.
Let's make trash pickup a private sector issue
Let's contract the trash pick and save the citizens money. Cut any and all city positions that don't require special training or loyality due to their exposure to important information. Private business would eliminate the need to pay retirements and associated benefits of employment increasing the savings down the road.
If they don't like the way the city treats them i.e. making them be at work on time etc. then let them find employment elsewhere.
agree with cynthia--requests
agree with cynthia--requests are too vague--must be more specific
What is the Problem
In all of this, no one has reported EXACTLY what the issues are. If they are complaining about wages then report their salary and compare it to other sanitation workers across the country. If benefits are the issue then report what their benefits are as compared to other organizations. What working conditions are issues. Please someone from one of these groups report the facts, please!
Otherwise it appears as if this is another media driven moment for Calvin Henderson and the CAR. If you want the public support tell us what the issues are. My guess is the average citizen is not going to feel sympathetic to employees making a fair wage, receiving decent benefits and expected to work!
First the schools
got so screwed up that a kid can't get a decent education in Pitt County and now they want to screw up garbage collection. Where does it stop?
