ECU to host blood drive today

East Carolina University will hold a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Mendenhall Student Center. In addition, the Eastern North Carolina Donor Center, 700 Cromwell Drive, will be open from 1-7 p.m.

Program on immigration planned Saturday

The program “Building Communities: Pitt County Speaks about Immigration” will be presented from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Sponsored by the North Carolina Council of Churches and the Institute for the Study of the Americas at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the event will feature breakout sessions about immigration and the economy, the education system and faith communities. A panel will examine the impacts of immigration policies such as 287(g) and Secure Communities in North Carolina. Light refreshments will be provided. Area turkey shoots planned this month

Several fire departments are holding turkey shoot fundraisers this month. Concessions will be available at each shoot.

Belvoir's event will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and Nov. 13, 20 and 25. Turkey, ham and money rounds will be shot in addition to the Shoot the Light round. For more information, call David Roebuck at 341-1718.

Stokes' shoot begins at 7 p.m. Friday and Nov. 13, and 20 at the fire department on N.C. 903. For more information, call Rodney Warren at 531-9441.

Staton House will hold its shoot at 7 p.m. each Saturday in November at N.C. 11 and Futrell-Robson Road. Turkey, rib-eye and money rounds will be offered in addition to the light-box shot. For more information, call 752-3879.

Commissioners to hold forum on Tuesday

Pitt County Board of Commissioners Chairman Melvin McLawhorn and Commissioner Eugene James will host a community forum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Boys & Girls Club, 475 Belvoir Highway/N.C. 33. The forum is a follow-up meeting to a forum held in August. For more information, call the county manager's office at 902-2950.

Items sought for Veterans Day exhibit

The May Museum in conjunction with U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr. is seeking short-term loans on any local memorabilia to be used for a Veterans Day exhibit. The exhibit would remain up at least through Memorial Day. Items needed are photographs, letters, artifacts, clippings, uniforms, medals and other items that are fully identified with names, branch of service, war or conflict if applicable, years served and rank. Blankets collected for the elderly

Blankets for the Elderly, sponsored by Restoring the Hoop and Tanka Oyate Tiospey, will be collected from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday during Epsilon Chi Nu's annual pow wow at Mendenhall Student Center, East Carolina University. Blankets, which will be sent to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, also may be dropped off at Dr. Robert Cargill, 2207 Evans St.; Cline Hall Agency, 3750 S. Evans St.; J & E Harley-Davidson, 2300 Elaine's Way, Winterville, or Dragonfly Bead Company, 2564 Railroad St., Winterville.

notice in the world series this year there was steady spitting thru out the entire series by the ball players--someone should tell them to grow up!
