Erica Hughes Hickman , right, a volunteer with Friends of the Pitt County Animal Shelter, recently won the Support Person of the Year award at the North Carolina Animal and Rabies Control Association (NCARCA) conference in Concord. An employee at East Carolina University, her volunteer efforts are to save animals at the shelter. She is shown with Michele Whaley, shelter manager and secretary of NCARCA. Sandy Woolard, chief animal control officer for Beaufort County, won the Animal Control Officer of the Year Award at the conference.
