The Relay For Life of Pitt County was recently recognized with the American Cancer Society's All American Award, which honors the Relay For Life events that show growth, retention, relay branding, diversity and leadership. More than 5,000 Relay For Life events were held in the United States in 2009 and the Relay For Life of Pitt County was one of the 59 events recognized nationwide.
Linda Clark and Ed Scanlan, event co-chairs, led the Relay For Life of Pitt County, which raised $358,000, a nearly $70,000 increase from the 2008 relay. More than 180 survivors participated in the opening lap of the event and 99 teams participated.
“So many people worked to make our event a success,” Clark said.. “I feel proud to live in a community where people are willing to take up the fight against cancer.
“Relay For Life is such a wonderful event, not only because of the money that's raised, but for the opportunity it provides for people to come together around a common cause.”
The Relay For Life of Pitt County will be held at South Central High School April 23-24. Information about how to form a team or become involved in Relay For Life is available from the American Cancer Society at 695-9028 or by visiting www.relayforlife.org/pitt.
