East Carolina University, located in Greenville, is a doctoral-research institution with an enrollment of about 23,000. It is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system.

Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, ECU offers degrees in 10 colleges and schools: arts and sciences, medicine, nursing, allied health sciences, health and human performance, business, education, fine arts and communication, human ecology, and technology and computer science.

It offers about 105 undergraduate degree program tracks and 91 graduate degree programs. There are 16 doctoral programs in fields such as medical sciences, education, coastal resources management, communication sciences and disorders, biomedical physics and nursing.

Parking
Visitors to campus can purchase parking permits from the Department of Parking and Transportation Services, located on East 10th Street, 328-4005. They also may obtain one from the department they are visiting. The permit allows parking in specified areas of campus, including the visitor lot at the Howard House on East Fifth Street. No permit is required to use a metered parking space.

ECU Board of Trustees
The 12 trustees make up the university's governing board. Eight members are appointed by the UNC System Board of Governors and four are appointed by the governor to four-year terms. They are responsible for promoting the sound development of the university and advise the Board of Governors and the chancellor on managing and development of the institution. The board meets five times a year. Members include:

  • Chairman Stephen D. Showfety of Greensboro is the president of Koury Corporation. Showfety graduated from ECU in 1970.
  • Vice Chairman Robert J. Greczyn Jr. of Durham is president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. He is a 1973 alumnus of ECU.
  • Secretary Michael Kelly of Nags Head is the owner of Kelly's Outer Banks Restaurant and Tavern. Kelly graduated from ECU in 1972.
  • Robert O. Hill Jr. of Kinston is the president and chief executive officer of Hillco Limited.
  • Mark Tipton of Raleigh is the owner of Whistler Investment Group. He received his bachelor's degree from ECU in 1973.
  • William H. Bodenhamer Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is founder, president and chief executive officer of USA Parking Systems Inc.
  • David S. Brody of Kinston is the managing partner of Brody Associates and co-owner of Eastern Carolina Coca-Cola.
  • E. David Redwine of Ocean Isle Beach is a former member of the N.C. General Assembly, where he was co-chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. He is a 1973 graduate of ECU.
  • Joel Butler of Greenville is the vice president for external affairs for University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. He holds a master's degree in public administration from ECU.
  • Bruce N. Austin Jr. of Manteo is a retired senior vice president of Wachovia Bank, N.A. He received his bachelor's degree from ECU.
  • Margaret C. Ward is a civic leader in Burlington. Ward holds two degrees from ECU.
  • Cole Jones, Student Government Association president, serves on the board as an ex-officio member. He is a first-year graduate student at ECU.

PITT COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Pitt Community College, located in Winterville, awards associate degrees, diplomas and certificates for more than 60 programs and provides adult basic education, literacy training and occupational extension courses. Enrollment averages about 6,000 per semester with another 7,500 continuing education participants per semester.

PCC Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is the college's governing body. It meets at 4 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of September, November, January, March and May. Its members include:

  • Vice Chairwoman Valerie J. Dixon, assistant vice president of financial services at Pitt County Memorial Hospital
  • Kelly Barnhill Jr., president of Hendrix-Barnhill Inc.
  • Randy Collier, University Health Systems and Pitt County School
  • Paul Davenport III, owner of Davenport Farms
  • Dr. Peter J. Kragel, associate vice chancellor for health planning with the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine
  • Gary L. Evans, vice president and green market manager of Alliance One International
  • Anne McGaughey, retired office manager of DIMON International Inc. of Farmville
  • Diane Murphrey, senior vice president and corporate secretary-treasurer of Copypro Inc.
  • James A. Nelson Jr., partner in Owens, Rouse & Nelson, PLLC - Attorneys at Law
  • A. Ray Rogers, financial administrator at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church
  • Karen Perry, Student Government Association president, serves as an ex-officio member
