Pitt County court system

The Pitt County Courthouse, 100 W. Third St., between Washington and Evans streets, 830-6400, houses state Superior and District courts for criminal and civil cases.

Superior Court — Criminal Superior Court hears felony cases and cases appealed from District Court. Civil Superior Court handles cases involving disputes in excess of $10,000, and other matters as provided by law.

District Court — Criminal court meets every day in Greenville; Tuesdays in Ayden; Thursdays in Farmville. The court handles traffic cases, misdemeanors, probable-cause hearings on felony cases and all first-appearance hearings.

Juvenile Court — Sessions every Tuesday and Thursday. Cases involve the district attorney and the Department of Social Services.

Civil Sessions — Meets once every two weeks on Fridays, Domestic court, generally two weeks each month.

Superior Court Judges: Senior resident, W. Russell Duke Jr.; resident, Clifton W. Everett Jr.; special, Thomas D. Haigwood. 695-7260.

District Court Judges: David A. Leech, chief judge; P. Gwynett Hilburn; Joseph A. Blick Jr.; G. Galen Braddy; Charles M. Vincent. 695-7270.

Magistrates: Offices are located at 124 New Hope Drive, Greenville, 695-7395; 4144 West Ave., Ayden, 746-7015; 3672 N. Main St., Farmville, 753-4111. Magistrates include: James Cowan (Farmville and Greenville), Keith Hall (Ayden and Greenville), Cheryl Jordan (Greenville), V. Mitchell Oakley (Ayden, Grifton and Greenville), James Dupree (Bethel and Greenville), Angela Milbourne (Greenville), Les Causey (Greenville), Lewis Elmore Hodges (Greenville), Les Turner Sr. (Greenville), Bobby Hardy (Greenville), J. Keith Knox (Greenville)

District Attorney: Clark Everett is responsible for prosecuting all criminal matters in Pitt County.

Public Defenders Office: Donald Hicks, public defender, 212 S. Greene St., P.O. Box 8047, Greenville, 27835. Phone: 695-7300. Judges appoint attorneys with the office to represent indigent defendants.

Clerk of Superior Court: Eleanor Farr, 695-7100, 100 W. Third ST., P.O. Box 6067, Greenville, 27835. Manages records for civil and criminal court proceedings.

Register of Deeds: Judy Tart, 100 W. Third St., Greenville, 27834. Office processes records, property transfers, birth and death certificates and other vital records.

Federal Court: Clerks office and general information, 830-6009. U.S. District Judge Malcolm J. Howard hears cases in the federal courthouse at 201 S. Evans St. Magistrate Judge David W. Daniel holds detention hearings and initial appearances in criminal matters as well as conducting pretrial conferences and settlement conferences in civil matters in the courthouse at 215 S. Evans St.
