ECU's Holtz taking part in fund-raising golf tournament

East Carolina head football coach Skip Holtz will join one of the more popular youths of the community, Drew Steele, in hosting a golf tournament in June that will raise funds for "Special Populations."

The Drew Steele/Skip Holtz Superball tournament will be held June 5 at Bradford Creek and will be preceded by a dinner on June 4 at the Murphy Center on the ECU campus.

The Special Populations program is administered by the Greenville Recreation and Parks Department. All proceeds from the tournament will remain in Pitt County.

An auction will be held during the banquet to add to funds for the event.

For the golf, a number of ECU football and basketball coaches will attend and plans call for each foursome to be joined by an ECU athletic figure.

At this point, plans are still being made for the tournament, including whether both a.m. and p.m. rounds will be held. The entry fee is also still undecided.

However, Mike Steele, one of the tournament organizers, said that he has already received a lot of interest in the tournament. "The amount of enthusiasm that Coach Holtz is bringing to the table with this is great. And Drew has been here a long time and is someone that people can grab a hold of," Mike Steele said.

DSM has come on board as the lead sponsor for the tournament but other gold sponsors are being sought.

Anyone wishing to sign up as a sponsor, or to play in the tournament should contact Steele or Kelley Demotts at 756-9630.

Further details will appear here as they are made known.
