About 20 law enforcement officers ran nine miles in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to raise money for Special Olympics on Thursday.
Officers from agencies which included the Greenville Police Department, Pitt County Sheriff's Office and the probation and parole office took turns carrying the torch during their run from the Greenville Town Common to the Wesley Church Road exit on U.S. 264 near Farmville, Greenville Police Lt. R.A. Williams said.
East Carolina University football coach Skip Holtz joined officers for about half the run, Williams said.
Officers passed the torch to the Farmville Police Department. It will end up in Raleigh on June 2 before the start of the summer Special Olympic games, Williams said.
The torch run is the Special Olympics' largest grass-roots fundraiser, raising $21.4 million for programs around the world in 2005, according to the group's Web site.
Both the Greenville Police and the Sheriff's Office are selling raffle tickets for a Harley Davidson motorcycle to be raffled off at the fall Special Olympic games. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at the Sheriff's office, 100 W. Third St., or the Greenville Police Department on Greene St.
