What are you planning to do Sunday night? Laundry? Watching a repeat of "Desperate Housewives"?

We've got a better idea.

Wouldn't you rather contribute to a good cause, have a nice dinner, socialize with friends old and new, and purchase a great trip or wonderful gift?

You still have time to get a ticket to the dinner auction that kicks off the inaugural Drew Steele-Skip Holtz Golf Classic. The event, a benefit for The Special Populations of Pitt County and the Drew Steele Endowment Fund, will be held from 6-9 p.m. Sunday in East Carolina University's Murphy Center.

Special Olympian Drew Steele, the 21-year-old son of former ECU Basketball Coach Mike Steele and his wife, Sandy, met ECU Football Coach Skip Holtz last year at a golf tournament benefitting the Special Olympics. Holtz has said that he was so inspired by the young man's positive attitude that he asked him to speak to his players and later gave him a job in the equipment room.

"Drew has meant so much to me personally and to our football team," Holtz is quoted as saying on the event's Web site, www.drewskip.com. "This is going to be a wonderful event honoring a wonderful young man and we're going to raise a lot of money for Drew and his friends" in Pitt County's special populations.

Mike Steele, said he's gratified by the way the community has gotten behind the fundraiser.

"I think that what's been fun is the outpouring of participation and the way everybody's worked together," he said. "There are five car dealers, five restaurants, people that are normally competitors, who are working together. I think that's strictly because of Drew and Coach Holtz."

Dinner will be catered by Greenville restaurants The Beef Barn, Chefs 505, Christinne's Seafood Grille & Chop House and Finelli's Café. The evening also will include silent and live auctions.

Among the 14 silent-auction items are: an ECU-Navy Game experience for four people, including a trip to Annapolis, Md., on a private plane and sideline passes; a pair of autographed Muhammad Ali boxing gloves; a "Sports Reporter for the Day" experience with Brian Bailey during the ECU-West Virginia football game; a Cal Ripken Jr. package including an authentic Baltimore Orioles jersey and a baseball signed by the former Major League Baseball star; and a University of North Carolina basketball package including a framed Carolina basketball jersey signed by Coach Roy Williams, an autographed Coach Dean Smith book and a plaque featuring a picture of Smith and signed tickets from his historic wins No. 876 and 877.

Among the 40 silent-auction items are a football signed by NFL Football Hall-of-Famer Jim Brown; a football signed by Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden; a basketball signed by Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski; and a Houston Rockets jersey signed by Keith Bogans and Luther Head.

Tickets to the dinner and auction are $75 per person. Reservations must be made by 5 p.m. today by calling Kelley DeMotts at 756-9630.
