Cottage's destruction a painful loss

The loss of an iconic cottage in Nags Head has been captured in a photo that has become a symbol of Hurricane Irene's destruction along North Carolina's Outer Banks.

The Markham-Albertson-Stinson Cottage, known to many as Stinson's Ranch, succumbed to Irene on Saturday. Billy and Sandra Stinson of Greenville, along with their daughter, Erin, waded into the Roanoke Sound on Sunday to watch the sunset from a set of wooden steps — all that remained of the vacation home the family has owned for nearly 50 years.

Scott Olson of Getty Images captured that moment, which has now been shared with readers of the New York Post, San Francisco Chronicle and London Daily Mirror, among others.

My condolences

Billy you probably don't remember me. Many years ago as an art ed student at ECU I observed your class. Always thought you were a great teacher and a fine creative mind. So sorry about this. I saw the feature article in Our State magazine. What a magical place it must have been. I pray that the heavenly Father will asuage the anguish of your grief and leave you only with the cherished memories your family made there.

So sorry for your loss

Billy, Sandra and Family,

I am so sorry that you lost your Home away from Home. Having a similar cottage at White Lake that's been in our family for 40+ years, I totally understand the feeling of loss. Your many, many memories are not lost and we thank God for that! Take care and know that others are keeping your family in thoughts and prayers.
