West Greenville residents will see a decades-long dream take shape this year after the City Council voted Monday to appropriate funds for redevelopment of the Dream Park.

In a split vote, the council voted to appropriate $534,900 in matching funds from the city’s general fund while it awaits approval of a $250,000 state Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant for which the city’s parks department has applied. The projected cost for reconstructing the park is $784,900, City Manager Wayne Bowers reminded the council before the vote.

Council members Rose Glover, Max Joyner Jr., Dennis Mitchell and Kandie Smith voted for the funding. Councilman Calvin Mercer and Councilwoman Marion Blackburn voted against the action.

*it'll be a million

*it'll be a million dollars--at least-before this nightmare of a park is finished--and probably ALL coming from the taxpayers of greenville. WE CANNOT AFFORD THIS OR ANY OTHER PARK LOCATED ANYWHERE IN GREENVILE.

some members of this city council seem to think that greenville is a bottomless pit for money from the coffers of the city. it's so easy to spend other people's money.

Here we go again

Just like the old council a few years ago with the contingent of four....Now we have Glover, Mitchell, Smith and Joyner running the City.

Not for anything, but anyone could have seen that Mitchell was going to vote with his subordinate and Glover. I too am not against parks, however $750,000 is too much to spend considering the other needs within the City. If a grant funded part of it and the City was asked to put up some money then I would not be as opposed.

park supporters seem to be getting what they want...

but perhaps do not recognize it yet.

I waited and it didn't take

I waited and it didn't take long. The race card was played. I would have been very disappointed if Glover, and now Mitchell, didn't throw the race card out there. Watching these council fools is better than American Idol. The only problem is they're spending my money irresponsibly. Maybe Thomas can put a time limit, and a muzzle,on Glover when she speaks on any issue that requires any sense. While your at it, don't spend any more of our tax money until after the next election. That way we can vote all of you out and maybe dissolve a City Council completely. Give the money back to the people that pay the taxes and stop giving it to takers.
Maybe we can connect the greenway to the Dream Park. That way the criminals will have a nice escape route.

*which areas of greenville

*which areas of greenville are paying MOST of the taxes?

WHAT?

“I’ve seen things being taken away from this community for 30 years now to give to the other parts. I think they need to be fair and think about people other than those they represent.”

Uh, that's what the council members were elected for. It's their job to look out for the people in their area that voted them into office. Those are the people they work for. That statement really shows how out of touch, ignorant, and selfish Glover is. I'll bet if someone told her she needed to be fair and think about people other than those she represents, she would find that offensive.

*which areas of greenville

*which areas of greenville are paying MOST in taxes?

Responsible?

Should we thank you Rose Glover, Joyner, Mitchell, and Smith for costing the City $250,000 plus. Why would you ask Parks and Recreation to apply for a grant and then you ALL make it clear you are going to fund the $750,000 plus project? It will be a miracle if the grant is funded. Absolutely irresponsible leadership! What happens on the next grant applied for? I am sure the Trust Fund Committee will ask if you have already funded the project. Pretty bad! I am not opposed to this park or to any park in the City but come on let's be responsible!

*let's be responsible? from

*let's be responsible? from where do most tax monies come from in greenville? probably not from where this park money is being spent. WE CAN'T AFFORD THE ONE MILLION PLUS THIS PARK WILL COST.
