Records indicate the driver in a fatal wreck on Fifth Street that killed one person and left at least one hospitalized Saturday had a history of substance abuse behind the wheel.
Omar Solamen Chahid was convicted in July in Carteret County of driving under 21 while consuming a controlled substance, a class two misdemeanor, according to the North Carolina Department of Corrections. He was sentenced to 18 months probation.
Chahid, 18, was behind the wheel of a Nissan Altima at 5:49 a.m. Friday when the car went off the left side of the road and crashed into iron fencing around Greenwood Cemetery before it bounced back into the road and came to rest on its roof, police said.
