Pitt County officials say insurance rates in one local fire district will come down now that its department has received an improved rating from the state fire marshal’s office.

The Winter Fire District’s rating has increased to a 6/9E rating, up from the 9 rating it received last year when the Winterville Community Rural Fire Association became the sole fire service provider for the 26-square-mile area outside the town of Winterville.

The rating change goes into effect Dec. 1, said N.C. Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin, who also is the state fire marshal.
