A rise in confirmed flu cases and 13 deaths in the state prompted more than 100 people on Sunday to stop in at Vidant Wellness Center for a flu shot.

Vidant Health held a free flu clinic at the center on Sunday due to increased flu activity, according to Jacob Perry, a wellness program specialist.

Thirteen deaths have been reported statewide since mid-November, according to N.C. Department of Health and Human Services data. Seven of the deaths occurred in people ages 25-49, five deaths occurred in ages 50-64, and one person older than 65 died from the flu.
