Two Greenville children recently were missing for several hours near a local park after becoming disoriented while playing a game that was used by East Carolina University students for a scavenger hunt.
Geocaching is a GPS-based treasure hunting game that offers gamers more than two million opportunities to explore the outdoors in search for global caches.
Originated in 2000 by Dave Ulmer, geocaching was created from Ulmer’s curiosity about his GPS’s accuracy. After hiding a bucket in the woods and writing down the location’s coordinates, Ulmer posted them to an online forum for others to go check out, according to geocaching’s website.
