Two state organizations dedicated to civil and workers’ rights are lending their support to Greenville city sanitation workers who temporarily walked off the job last month.

The state chapter of the NAACP joined with the Pitt County branch this week and released a statement supporting the workers and urging them to form a union.

Members of North Carolina Public Service Workers Union UE 150 are helping the sanitation workers organize their efforts to meet with the city’s management team to discuss their issues.

NAACP

Ask yourself if the sanitation workers were not (I believe the Reflector said 90%) heavily slanted towards a black majority would the NAACP be interested? Are they looking to make this another Race issue?

As far as I am concern the City needs to contract the sanitation worker's jobs out like the larger cities do and save money on retirements and benefits. In todays economy it is a sound idea to cut your longterm libilities.

In todays job market I am sure that if you strike you will lose your job because there are lots of people looking for work.

I really have a problem when you complain that the boss will not let you come to work late and leave early. "after they were notified a new policy for reporting to work was being implemented"

“Labor rights are essential to civil rights' sounds to me like someone is trying to change the labor laws and base the idea on Civil rights and racism. Remember the Democratic party is supported and supportive of organized labor. The right to work is the corner stone and foundation for these United States. Look at all the industries the Unions have forced to take jobs overseas. Want to organized? Go ahead and watch the job market dry up and the new hires get screwed with job reductions.

I guess the bottom line is I don't want to pay someone for the priviledge of working and earning a salary. That's right they are called Union dues!! Once you sign up the Union has it's hands on your pay check.

If the NAACP wants to support and assist in Union building take their non-profit status away so they can pay more taxes.

In this current economic climate......

and job outlook. These sanitation workers are treading on thin ice. Please, please walk off your job. It will not be there when you return and will be filled by someone willing to do it for $.25 less an hour.

Please, let me finish this sentence...

"If Greenville’s sanitation workers had access to collective bargaining" the city would be broke right now.

They're trash men. If they don't like the job, the pay or the conditions, find another job. This whole mess stinks of people that want to show up for work when they feel like it, and not be held accountable.
