When it comes to hurricane evacuation, Cora Tyson has this philosophy: No pets left behind.
She learned it while volunteering locally with Emergency Animal Rescue Service after 1999's Hurricane Floyd. She saw the devastating effects again when she volunteered with EARS for two months following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
“That's the problem I've seen with all the disasters I've been to,” Tyson said. “People think, ‘Well, I'll just go into the shelter, and as soon as it's over I'll run home and grab what I need.' A lot of times there may not be a home left or it's underwater or the roads are blocked. You just never know.”
