Two inmates were injured Tuesday morning in a wreck in Pitt County while working on a roadway job with the Department of Transportation, a State Highway Patrol trooper said.

Three inmates from Greene Correctional Institute in Maury were riding about 11:25 a.m. with a DOT worker in an open-bed state truck with a rear cab, heading west on Rams Horn Road near Whichard Road, Trooper Greg Koontz said.

Traveling behind them was a private white pickup truck, he said.
