Last week's theft of a 5-year-old mixed pit bull from the local humane society has staff and volunteers fearing the worst for the animal's future.
The purloined pooch is Lucy, a medium-sized dog with a tan coat and greenish eyes. She was the only animal taken Wednesday from the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina's Tucker Drive property, said Callie Clements, facility director.
It appears someone pushed in a locked gate leading to the dog runs at the rear of the property, she said.
“It could have been for dog fighting,” Clements said, “although we don't want to think that is the reason, but deep down that's what we're worried about.”
The deputy who investigated the break-in said he believed the animal was taken because of her breed, Clements said. However, Lucy's pen was the first one so she could have been the easiest to reach.
While Lucy and other dogs kept in the runs are not visible from the road, volunteers, community service workers and would-be adopters have seen her, making a suspect list impossible to assemble, Clements said.
Clements said Lucy was sweet-tempered around children and adults, but didn't get along with other dogs, a characteristic that might have led someone to think she would be a fighter.
Clements said she holds out hope that Lucy will be spared a violent life because whoever took her also made off with her rabies tag and information card, which contained her medical records.
Clements said Lucy looks like a pure-blooded Staffordshire bull terrier, one of the breeds sometimes referred to as pit bulls, so she wonders if someone took the medical records because they want to sell her.
Lucy was adopted from the humane society three years ago but was returned last year when her adopted family encountered financial difficulties. Last month a man was approved to adopt Lucy but decided against it because of financial concerns, Clements said.
On the advice of the deputy, Clements said the humane society added more locks to the pens in the back runs. It appeared to be a successful deterrent because staff discovered that sometime Friday night someone damaged fencing in the rear, in another attempt to reach the runs, she said. No animals were taken.
Lucy had a pink collar with her rabies tag number, 10999. Anyone with information about her location is asked to call the humane society at 413-7247.
Clements urged the public to be on the lookout for Lucy.
“Please keep your eyes peeled. All we want is for Lucy to be safe and if (someone) hears anything please contact us,” she said.
“The longer (an animal) stays here, the more you get to know them,” Clements said. “If they leave for some reason other than going to a forever home, it breaks your heart.”

Is there any up dates on Lucky? I pray she is found. Poor dog. I can just image what she is going through if someone took her for fighting.

My heart breaks for all animals who don't have loving homes. What trash would break into a facility trying it's best to provide a hopefully temporary home?? Please keep a check on the Daily Reflector's Lost & Found to see if anyone may have found Lucy. Thanks,

No dog should ever fight unless his owner is in the fight with him. Maybe that should be the sentence if someone is caught sending a dog to fight alone. They should have to fight the next round without the dog.

This is just horrible! If I had the funds, I would donate whatever the Humane Society needed! God Bless precious Lucy!
Suggest removalIt's also a shame that apartment complexes around Greenville won't allow you to have more than one pet, I would most definitely adopt one from GHS!!

Barbara, I think that's wonderful that you are so passionate about this subject that you're going to donate the wooden fence for the shelter. That, along with Gville's donation of the video cameras and security system will be a big help and much appreciated. I'm sure the Humane Society has many other needs that people could help with also.

This is heartbreaking and disgusting! It's bad enough that the poor animal was in a shelter to begin with. People need to be responsible if they have pets - spay and neuter so there are no more homeless animals! And anyone involved with dog fighting should be heavily prosecuted. This sickness has to stop. Please put a wooden fence around that yard!

No dog or any animal should be used for fighting. They are to be loved and provided with a loving home.

You do realize this is the Humane Society and that it works off of mainly donations. Do you know anyone willing to donate video cameras and a security system?

CJ, I know what you mean. If they stole her, we can hope that she gets a good home, or if its for the worse, she runs away from them and someone else loving finds her. We can stay positive about it and hope for the best.

Yes it seems that some people are very interested in pit bulls lately.
Suggest removal"A pit bull dog valued at $175 was reported stolen from its home in the 400 block of Birchwood Drive either Saturday or Sunday, according to a Pitt County Sheriff's Office report. "
I hope that officials are looking into this "coincidence"

You should install video cameras and a security system, if you haven't already.
