North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue, the first woman governor in the state, will not seek re-election, she announced Thursday.

Perdue released a statement shortly after noon in which she stated she wanted to avoid what could be a bitterly partisan election. Bowing out would allow candidates to focus on needs the state has, particularly in the area of education, she said.

Perdue faced a tough rematch against former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, a Republican she narrowly defeated in 2008 in the state's closest gubernatorial contest since 1972, according to the Associated Press. Perdue's win was partly attributed to Barack Obama's surprise victory in North Carolina.

Good riddance

She knows she would lose! If the so called "rumors" about pulling monies from the education lottery for general fund use are just that {rumors}, why doesn't she show the proof? There's no reason our school system should be suffering the way it is with the kind of monies the "education" lottery is pulling in! And, she's got the nerve to try to call for another sales tax increase for education. The last thing us broke, middle-class people need is another tax!

See Ya!

leave it to Perdue to try & throw in more bs about doing it for the children & education. If you were so concerned about the education system, you wouldn't have allowed the Lotto money to be used for other things & you'd learn to spend the money the state has wisely instead of wasting it on stupid mess. I'm pretty sure all these political figures went to college & what do you learn in Finance class...spend less than what you bring it, save a little...but the state & this nation spends $ they don't even have in the first place. Guess they really learned a lot with their education.
