A new state law relaxing zero-tolerance disciplinary measures in schools necessitated changes in policies for Pitt County Schools.
At the Board of Education meeting on June 27, staff presented a revised copy of the Code of Student Conduct updated in accordance with Session Law 2011-282, approved June 23, which limits the use of long-term suspensions and expulsions and allows local administrators more flexibility in scaling punishments.
“The major impact is it prohibits zero-tolerance policies,” said Tom Daly, a retired administrator who temporarily filled the vacant post of Student Services Director this year. “Long-term suspensions cannot be used for minor infractions.”
