Pitt schools welcome families at open houses

By Josh Humphries

Thursday, August 21, 2008

School starts next week, but all Pitt County schools will have their doors open to families today for open house.

Glenn Joyner, principal at Chicod School, said the event is important for students, but it is also a traditional social event at Chicod.

“I think people look forward to coming out and seeing each other after a long summer,” he said.

At Chicod, there will be information on free/reduced lunch, pre-K programs, buses, classroom materials and uniforms. The school will also have uniform items on sale.

Every school in the district will host an open house today and feature similar information and events.

Parents and students can take tours, check out their classrooms and meet teachers.

“I think it gives all the kids and parents a chance to come out and meet the teachers and find their way around the school and have any pressing questions answered before they get here and have a lot of confusion on the first day of school,” Joyner said.

School begins Monday for Pitt County Schools.

Not flexible

08/21/2008 08:45:44 AM

My child's school has open house from 5 - 6:30 pm. My only frustration is that I work rotating shifts and I have to be at work at that time. I contacted the principal to see if I could come out any other time, but was informed that I could not. Friends of mine who are teachers have to be in their classrooms around 11 am today and have all voiced they would flex to meet with interested parents. Seems there is a breakdown in communication in the so-called school "managerial" pyramid!
