Grifton police identified the body of a man found Friday evening in Contentnea Creek and said he apparently drowned.

A couple canoeing on the creek called 911 about 7:30 a.m. Friday and reported that they had discovered the fully clothed body — identified Tuesday as that of Leslie Artis, 56, of Grifton — floating in the water, Cauley said.

The cause of the drowning has not been established, but police are hoping further examination will reveal more.
