Greenville police put all available officers on duty Wednesday in neighborhoods throughout the city, although there were no breaking emergencies that forced them to be out there. It was “Operation All Hands on Deck,” which saturated high-crime neighborhoods with officers, including detectives, administrative officers and command staff who might have been away from the streets for a while, Lt. Chris Ivey said.

“It's a holistic approach to policing,” Ivey said. “We're inundating the hot spots in the city with our officers between 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Wednesday), going door-to-door and walking on the streets, talking with neighbors about their crime concerns, serving warrants, conducting traffic checkpoints and arresting people we see committing crimes.”

The information that sent the crews to specific neighborhoods and streets came from analysis of data officers gather in their daily operations as part of the area policing plan, Ivey said. The city is divided into four policing zones, with officers assigned long term to one of the zones so they get to know the residents, the criminals and the specific problems of that area.
