Halloween weekend brings plenty of crime

The Daily Reflector

Tuesday, November 03, 2009

An 18-year-old woman was the victim of a sex offense early Sunday, according to the Greenville Police Department. It was among a slew of crimes reported to police over the halloween weekend.

The incident occurred between 1-2 a.m. A report indicated an investigation was ongoing but offered no information about a suspect. The report did not list the extent of any injuries or say if a weapon was used. It did not give the location of the incident.

A police spokesman said that information is limited. The victim is not in the hospital, and the incident did not occur during downtown Halloween festivities, he said.

Child abuse

Police on Friday responded to a report of child abuse involving five children. A woman reported the abuse occurred between Sept. 15 and Friday. A report listed the offense address in the 1600 block of Preston Place. It did not list the nature of the abuse, the extent of injuries, the ages or sex of the children or the relationship of the woman reporting the abuse. It did not indicate an arrest had been made.

Police investigated several incidents including nine vehicle break-ins in the North Campus Crossing apartment complex, according to reports. Nine vehicles were targeted Friday and Saturday along Bostic Drive in the gated community. Stereo equipment, clothes, electronics and cash were stolen.

An Apple laptop valued at $2,000 was stolen during a break-in Saturday or Sunday at an apartment in the 4300 block of Bostic Drive. A 19-year-old female was listed as the victim.

I've lived here @ 48yrs. and I can't ever remember crime being this bad in Greenville! Our neighborhood watch programs have to get more organized and more involved in the prevention of what is going on. Maybe shift work of neighbors monitoring their neighborhoods (by vehicles). I can only assume GPD does not have the manpower that Greenville needs at this time. I do not want to set idle and be a victim. I am very concerned! What can we do as citizens?

If Halloween wknd brought in a lot of crime, can someone tell me what it's like here during the month of December? I bet these thugs break into a lot of homes to steal all the Christmas presents!! Geeze, I live in a good part of town, but I'm begining to wonder if I should leave all my gifts locked up somewhere before placing them under the tree on Xmas Eve....thanks to the stupid thugs.

I've seen several police cars parked at several local gas stations just parked. This was like maybe 8:30-9 in the morning. Makes you wonder what they are doing with the rest of their day. Probably still parked when all this crime is going on.

That was not a crime but a typical "prank", and at least you knew what was happening. Sorry about the stench!

Now, the police cannot be everywhere, but why are there not more police cars patrolling the areas in the late evenings and early mornings when this is happening? This town is definitely Ghetto Vegas (Ghetto-Gville). Let's see how the election comes out but am sure the same do-nothing council and mayor will be elected.

I agree that all we hear from the council and the chief of police is that crime is down...oh wait, they mean violent crime! If they were the victims of the home break ins, car break ins, and robberies then maybe they would change their tune or should I say "statements".

Some lit a bag of something on my doorstep Halloween night, rang the doorball and ran away. I don't know what it was but it smelled terrible. I had to scrub my steps Sunday and the odor was awful.

Jay, I hope your daughters didn't move to Fayetteville where 4 people were just murdered or Raleigh where a drunk driving doctor slammed into a dance student, killing her or small town Mt. Airy where 4 more people were murdered and I could go on, I truly hope your daughters are safe but open your eyes there is mean everywhere.

"worst place in all nc to live" is is obvious that you have never been to Fayetteville, Wilmington, Gastonia, and Rocky Mount. There was a influx of people in Greenville over the weekend, I even met someone from Colorado and with the influx comes more incidents. Did you see the crime reports for Chapel Hill, same thing!

Parents need to rethink the way they are raising their children in Pitt County. We need to take responsibility and raise good people. Is the the result of poor parenting???? The police can't be everywhere, maybe the crooks knew the police would be concentrated downtown.

I think the Reflector should use a little more tact in choosing a title (Halloween Weekend Brings Plenty of Tricks) for an article that discusses sexual assault and child abuse, among other crimes.
