The future of East Carolina football coach Skip Holtz remained a hot topic Sunday.
In the immediate aftermath of the Pirates’ 27-24 upset of Tulsa in the Conference USA championship game, rumors about the fourth-year coach heading to Syracuse continued to swirl.
An NFL Network report speculated Holtz, 29-21 in four seasons with the Pirates, was expected to accept the Syracuse job today. Holtz told The Associated Press that the report was “inaccurate,” but did say he would like to meet with Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross.
“I would like to have the opportunity to talk to Daryl Gross,” Holtz told the AP. “But at this point, no, I’m not going through an interview process. I’ve made that very clear.”
Holtz was the keynote speaker at the Bronko Nagurski Trophy dinner at the Charlotte Touchdown Club on Sunday night. Holtz will travel to New York today for his father’s induction into the College Football Hall of Fame Tuesday night.
According to a report from The Post-Standard in Syracuse, Lou Holtz said his son would likely interview with Syracuse while in New York.
But ECU Director of Athletics Terry Holland said in a statement issued last Thursday night that Holtz had not been contacted by other universities and not asked for permission to interview at another institution.
Holland’s statement confirmed the AD would grant Holtz permission to do so.
After beating Tulsa, Holtz said it would take a special opportunity to take him out of Greenville.
“I am not looking to leave, I will make that promise to you,” Holtz said Saturday.

She will look just as good in orange as she did in purple. I heard awhile back to love the program and not the coach.

If Skip leaves it will be a mistake. He will be very miserable living in Syracuse. I hope Holtz does leave ECU. We do not need a coach that is putting focus on himself, instead of putting focus to this very important bowl game. It is like he is only concerned with money, and not worried about the outcome of the Liberty Bowl. Who needs a coach like Skip? His wife can buy all the gay orange sweaters she desires...and...hit the road jack...and don't come back no more, no more...hit the road jack...

The ACC will be the conference to take ECU. Especially, in the next few years, as long as, the Pirates keep up their winning ways. Also, if the Pirates make it into the ACC, there will be more money generated for the Athletic program, the university, and the local economy.

Skip will not leave to go to SU. Holtz can make as much as he wants, by staying at ECU. Winning the Liberty Bowl will make Holtz even richer. Plus, the Pirates will eventually make it to another conference. However, it is not required to be in a BCS conference, in order, to play in a BCS Bowl game. They Pirates need to get a stronger schedule, have more media attention from ESPN, and win 90% of their games.

As long as Skip is a winner there will be suitors from other universities. Even if he says "no" to Syracuse there will be other schools.

Mark my words....Skip will not take the SU jbo. He is holding out till the Notre Dame job comes open. It will be open next year with Weis out of the picture. The last time ND had a decent program was when Holtz SR. was there. Skip is an alum and that is where the man wants to be and is going.

Recruiting wise, NC and VA offer way better talent than in the Cuse area. Also, the weather down here is great as compared to up there. All I can say is that ECU has better facilities, fans, upside, and desire for football than SU. The Carrier Dome is a humid dump and spending several months in the cold will drive you crazy.

To stardust:
Yeah, Holland should just call up the ACC and tell them we want it in, it's that easy. Heck, why not call up the Big 12 or SEC.
To Question:
It's not about the quality of football, it's all about money and the size of the programs in the BCS conferences. Quality will come and go, ie Notre Dame, UCLA, Washington, Syracuse, Florida St., Miami, even ECU.

I don't understand why some of you are so critical of Skip...if you had an opportunity to test the waters, most of you would. Until we get a playoff system or get into a BCS (Big East, maybe) nobody is going to stay at ECU for 10+ years. Plus most big programs don't keep their coaches for a career anyway, so ECU's recent coaching history isn't that unique. If Skip leaves, he leaves the program 1000% better than it was when Thompson was fired and ECU will be an attractive job in the country.

He's going to meet with the SU Administration wile in New York, but is not going through an interview process. My guess is that he is meeting with them so as not to disrespect them, and to also offer his own insight into who would be a good hire for their program.

ECU must get into a better BCS conference. Otherwise, Greenville is only a waystop for coaches. You can hardly get news programs outside of Greenville to mention ECU, even tho we represent the fastest growing university in the state AND a huge alumni base. If it "ain't" the ACC, you don't get covered. If nothing else, hire a new Marketing Director.
Suggest removalNow is the time to make the move. Come on Terry, if you are looking for a legacy, move ECU into a respected conference.

Dont know why my last comment didnt take, but i orginally said for us to look at the history of ECU football. Pat Dye, Bill Lewis, even Steve Logan, all went on to bigger things and used ECU as a stepping stone. So do not expect a quality coach to stay until ECU is in a BCS conf.

If he is truly not comitted to the future of the Pirate program I say he should walk the plank. No need to hang around for the Liberty Bowl. Pack your long underwear and your snowshoes and hit the road. Otherwise enjoy your 1.5 million and shut your cakehole. Coaches today are way overpaid. Its the unpaid talent on the field that makes the difference.
