Council members want gang plan

9 Comments | Leave a Comment

Four City Council members on Friday announced they want a written plan to fight gang violence in Greenville and also said they will hold a citywide crime forum on Thursday.

Kandie Smith, Max Joyner, Marion Blackburn and Rose Glover made the announcements outside King's convenience store on West Fifth Street, the site of one of seven gang-related shootings that have occurred since June. 18.

They are requesting the plan from City Manager Wayne Bowers and police Chief William Anderson to deal with the problem of gangs and crime in west Greenville and other areas of the city, they said.

"Crime in our city is like gangrene in a body," Smith said during the news conference. "If you leave it alone, it spreads to the rest of the body. It's the City Council's No. 1 goal and a concern for the entire city."

perhaps we should begin in

perhaps we should begin in the schools. these gang members went right through a school system somewhere playing havoc on the whole education process--students and teachers. it starts in kindergarten the first day of school. get some input from educators.

Sounds good, but.....

It will be irresponsible of the NAACP and SCLC if they do not provide calm, sensible input to the City Manager and police Chief with this written plan. These groups often thrive on pointing fingers but rarely choose to be part of the solution.

I believe the plan needs to have everyone's input and blessing. The city can't increase police presence to combat this issue if law enforcement is constantly accused of wrongdoing and just plain not welcomed by residents in certain neighborhoods.

I hope the written plan will make a difference.

no written plan will make a difference without management

which is sorely lacking in the police department

surely i'm not privvy to info

surely i'm not privvy to info jack1919 has--but i think we need to give the police a break. if we had a policeman on every corner in the city, it would not solve the crime problem we have. the city cannot re-raise these troubled people which should have started day one off the delivery table. how we protect ourselves from them i don't know, but blaming the police is getting us nowhere.

surely ms smith has some ideas. perhaps she should inundate us with her vast knowledge. i have little respect for her since her stunt downtown but she may have an insight the rest of us don't.

JOKE

YOU KNOW THAT THE CITY MANAGER IS THE REAL POLICE CHIEF.ASK THE CHIEF ASNWER TO THAT,THE CITY MANAGER IS THE CHIEF ,REAL I HATED FOR MAN THAT WANT STAND UP .NOT ONE TIME HAVE THE CITY MANAGER COME OUT AND SAID ANYTHING FOR OR AGISNT THE CHIEF;AND HE WANT AS LONG AS THE CHIEF IS DOING WHAT HE IS TOLD!JOKE OF A CHIEF AND MANAGER ;BUT I WOULD DO THE SAME IF I COULD GET AWAY WITH IT. GREENVILLE HIDE IT DEEP SETED HATRED BEHIND A BLACK POLICE AND A MANAGER THAT IS FOR WHITES ONLY. GET A NEW MANAGER AND LET THE MAN DO WHAT HE GET PAID TO DO!KEEP YOU PEOPLE SAFE,MY BAD HE IS DOING A GOOD JOB OF THAT THE 12 BLACK MAN IF WEAR OUT BREAKEING THE LAW LIKE THE CHIEF SAY THEY ARE,DO YOU THINK THEY CARE BECAUSE HE SAID WE GONE LOCK THEM UP.I DON'T THINK HE KNOWS WHAT'S GONE ON IN GREENVILLE ;BUT I DO KNOW IT'S TIME FOR HIM TO GO ,NOT BECAUSE I WANT HIM TO ;BUT THE GANGS GONE RUN HIM OUT .

what did you say, now?

to abc123---what on earth did you say, now?

I suggest we dump Kandi

I suggest we dump Kandie Smith! What a joke! After her stunt downtown and having the nerve to request reimbursment for her legal fees............I have absolutely no respect for the woman! None!

I on the other hand do have respect

the woman was caught in a no win situation by a police officer with too much time and ego on his side.

There was a very good possibility the City would have been sued for any number of reasons and things would have came out in a jury trial that the police and City would prefer to keep quiet
no, a stupid issue on both sides would have turned ugly

The only complaint I have is the absolute silence by the mayor on this instance. She could have stopped it immediately with the DA but did not

as far as a joke is concerned , I think you are way off base

its called management

Lets see

hundreds of thousands of dollars spent downtown to protect some bar drunks

police driving around with their car windows up, the air on, the computer screens up and talking on their cell phones

the chief of police so arrogant and unmanaged by the city manager that he thinks this is a "little crime wave and criminals will only kill criminals"

I suggest we dump the police chief
