CULOWHEE, N.C. — Terrell Hudgins set the all-time Football Championship Subdivision record for receiving yards and Brandon Newsome ran for four touchdowns as Elon beat Western Carolina 42-17 on Saturday.
Hudgins caught eight passes for 153 yards and a touchdown, setting the all-time FCS record with 4,812 career yards, breaking Jerry Rice's mark of 4,693 receiving yards.
Newsome ran for 143 yards and scored on runs of 26, 18, 35 and 13 yards for the Phoenix (8-1, 6-0 Southern Conference).
With the game tied 14-14 in the second quarter, the Phoenix scored 21 unanswered points to put the game out of reach at the end of the third. Scott Riddle was 20-for-26 for 228 yards and a touchdown for the Phoenix.
Zack Jaynes was 15-for-21 with 140 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Catamounts (1-8, 1-6).
