Representatives of a union local from Raleigh went to the Greenville Public Works Department Tuesday to express support for Greenville public employees.

The city employees are expected to participate Saturday in a public hearing about dissatisfaction with working conditions.

"We hope the hearing will help the workers solve some of the problems they are facing and we call upon the city to create a just and fair working environment for those who provide quality services to the city," union organizer Ashaki Benta said during a news conference.

sanitation meeting saturday feb 4 2012

Only 6 santation workers appeared at the meeting on saturday according to the DR. City Council has the privledge to review their personnel records. I suggest they do. I also recommend that councilmember glover recuse herself from any future council action on this matter as she has chosen to sit in on this meeting creating a direct conflict of interest and exposing the city to litigation opportunities. Perhaps the council should take advantage of the legal expertise they have at their disposal and stop shooting from the hip!

Is it really about "dignity, fairness, and respect"?

Reasonable people respect our city sanitation workers and want them to have a safe and dignified work environment with competitive wages and benefits. I am proud that our city public works department provided a forum location for union and human rights organizations to advocate for sanitation workers. Wes Anderson is that kind of professional leader who listens and acts justly and deliberately.
The difficulty with understanding this dissatisfaction was never clear. The initial problem was related to a workers roll call process during the workday. Now the problem is "dignity, fairness, and respect." What happened to the roll call dissatisfaction?
Earlier reports last November never cited that all the sanitation workers joined the strike. That allegation by a speaker may not be factual.
There is an appearance that the strike was politically motivated to influence the city elections and was not related to "dignity, fairness, and respect." If sanitation workers find their working conditions worsen in the future based on votes of the new majority of the city council, they can blame Council members Glover and Mitchell who used the strike to advance thir own agendas and election chances at the expense of sanitation workers.

I'm with I95

I agree with I95 -- for all these guys to risk their jobs, there's got to be something serious going on. Cynthia, I'm a Greenville taxpayer and I've got a lot of sympathy with the workers. They're, um, my neighbors.

Outsourcing is the problem now with our country

Those of you saying outsourcing are a joke. You are the first ones to bemoan the fact that corporations have outsourced to other countries or firms from a state. You are total idiots because these foks are hard working and do a service to the citizens of Greenville and only want respect and dignity, as you do in your job. I stand behind them, and if you outsource then you just put out a little less than 100 individuals in our city and county from work who pay taxes and contribute to our oommunity. So you definitely have two faces because you are the ones who complain about outsourcing of jobs, but yet you want to do that in our city? Totally irrational and idiotic. Fix the problem within as these folks do their job day in and day out with a smile.

Talk about garbage...

Talk about garbage... The last thing our city needs is unions! Our taxes are high enough! The city should look into out-sourcing trash collection or start accepting applications for new employees. The pay & benefits for these workers is more than fair. I know people doing much dirtier work for less pay than these sanitation workers are making. They all should have been fired or put on work probation when they staged their walk-out back in Nov.! These employees are never gonna be satisfied with anything offered, especially with all the unnecessary attention being given to them.

How do you know that Jaycee?

Do you work for city? What do you know about whts going on? Please share?

Please...........

I worked for city, state & fed....it's allways "goin on".........waste & fraud!

I like this...

being treated fairly at work is important and expected. Something is wrong when all 72 are willing to risk their jobs. I wonder what it is? Maybe a hearing to find out is a good idea.

Its not the trash that's stinkin...this time the smell is coming from someplace else.

Trash Collection

Wouldn't it be wise to entertain bids for outsourcing this service currently provided by the City of Greenville. I mean if the employees are disgruntled even though by reasonable standards they have fair pay and benefits, it would seem to me to be a possible solution to this problem.

I don't see the taxpaying public or the unemployed showing much sympathy for the sanitation workers in this dispute.

home girl

oh cindy..my last comment was removed so we will try this:

So lets say you work for me. I sign your checks. Do I have the right to treat you any old way? Or are their laws that say I have to treat you fairly?

Hmmm........ Maybe we should find out whats really going on before we fire everybody...what you say home girl?

What do you say DR...will this one work?
