A new sign at the former Pitt County Memorial Hospital that changes its name to Vidant Medical Center was unveiled at a brief ceremony Wednesday.

University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina announced in November that the system would be renamed Vidant Health effective Wednesday. Vidant was chosen because the letters Vi are derived from the Latin root word of viv, meaning life and alive.

The main building at Vidant Medical Center has been named Pitt Memorial Building, a nod to the hospital’s heritage, said Dave Herman, president and chief operating officer of Vidant Health.

Name dispute ???

Why does it have to be made so complicated? "Vidant", what kind of name is that to reference it to Pitt County. ECU School of Medicine has taken over almost the entire facility, so why isn't the name reflecting On the County and ECU? You could have made it simple and name it "East Carolina University Medical Center". It might be a little longer but I have seen longer. Pitt County residents resent the name not reflecting Pitt County. Again, I ask, Hey, Physicians East, why don't you expand and start a hospital that will serve Pitt County residents. Your services would be so much better and you wouldn't have to pay for all of the doctor's and resident's that just walk in the room. Whereas: At "Vidant" you are charged whether you see the doctor or not when you are there and the resident's that walk in the room are also a seperate charge. (BIG RIP-OFF). Come on Physicians East step up and serve the Pitt County citizens. You could call yourself "Physicians East Medical Center of Pitt County".

You know

there are regular doctors in Greenville. You don't have to use the ER as your family physician.
