Wayward pig rescued

Swine found in City Market lot

A little piggy went to the market Wednesday morning and then she went whee, whee, whee to a new home in Grifton.

The pig, a juvenile female weighing approximately 25-30 pounds, was discovered about 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot across from City Market, at the corner of Jarvis and Third streets in Greenville's university district, said Tim Langley, Greenville Animal Control supervisor.

The pig was hiding under cars and trying to avoid people when Greenville police and animal control arrived, he said.

Using nets, Langley and three other animal control officers maneuvered the pig to a nearby fenced yard and captured her within 30 minutes. Langley took the pig to the Down East Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Grifton.

“When the police officer called about a pig at City Market we (animal control officers) all perked up and wanted to go because we wanted to make sure she was alright and didn't get hit by a car,”

It's unknown from where the pig came. Langley said it wasn't scraped or bruised so it's unlikely it fell off a transport truck. He speculated that someone may have left it at a nearby house or apartment as a prank and it escaped.

Langley estimated 15-20 people gathered in the parking lot to watch the pig's capture, many taking photographs and enjoying the unexpected site.

The pig will be held at the wildlife center for three days. If no one claims it, Langley said, it will be turned over to the center permanently.

“I'll adopt her out,” said Marti Brinson, center president. “I have friends who keep them and they become pets.”

Brinson said she won't allow the animal, which she named Charlotte, to be adopted by anyone who would slaughter her.

Maybe she will find herself a spider to weave her a web. Then they will write a book about her. Oh they did that already !

CJ, if there were a like button for your comment, I would have clicked it. Because seeing four grown men chasing after a baby pig is something that should be an essential for the world of youtube.

I loved this headline--makes me glad I live in Greenville. First sentence, too. But I've been informed that a juvenile pig is called a piglet.

I don't think the paper should be all about doom and gloom either, but give this guy a break. This really isn't news. Really, the Starlight is recycling oyster shells and a pig got caught by animal control? There has got to be something good (or bad) going on in Greenville that's actually newsworthy.

Kudo's to Greenville Animal Control! What a passionate organization. I have heard many good things about mr Langley and his staff. Greenville is lucky to have a professional animal care organization. Thanks Mr. Langley!

Such a great little story. I hope no one used the pig for one of those fraternity parties where they feed alcohol to the pig. That would be cruel and inhumane. Glad to know there is an animal rehab center. Heart warming. Glad to know the little pig will be safe if the owner doesn't pick it up.

Poor little piggy, but her directions are off a wee bit, the Piggly Wiggly store is on the other side of town. Have seen worse rift raft in that parking lot though.
