SMITHFIELD — A federal grand jury has indicted a teacher's assistant on several drug trafficking charges, among them selling heroin at Smithfield Selma High School.

The U.S. Attorney's Office announced Wednesday that 29-year-old Winston Antonio Evans was indicted last week on four counts of distributing heroin, including one count of distributing heroin within 1,000 feet of the high school. He's also charged with one count of possessing a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Department said Evans sold heroin to an undercover officer on the high school campus, and was also at a home near the school when he sold heroin to the same officer. Authorities say the offenses occurred between February and March.

Evans has worked for Johnston County schools since 2008. He is suspended with pay.
