William T. Coghill
Mr. William Thomas "Tom" Coghill, 81, died Monday, April 25, 2005.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Coghill, a native of Pitt County, was a graduate of Chicod High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a farmer for most of his life. He was a member of Hollywood Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Coghill was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Raymond and Minnie McRoy Coghill; a daughter, Deborah Ann Coghill; a sister, Verlin Cannon; and a brother, Raymond Coghill.
He is survived by a daughter, Gwendolyn K. Coghill and her husband, Granville F. Hogg, of Cape Charles, Va.; a son, William Thomas "Tom" Coghill Jr. and his wife, Linn Winbourne Coghill, of Chester, Va.; three grandchildren, Andrew Michael Coghill, Jennifer L. Hogg and Matthew G. Hogg; two sisters, Elsie Evans of Grimesland and Dorothy Harris of Winterville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Arthur Waters
FOUNTAIN — Mr. Arthur "Little Ray" Waters, 36, of 1535 Spain Bridge Road died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Church Street Chapel of the Farmville Funeral Home by Mark Mueller and Lee Mills. Interment will follow in the Falkland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Mr. Waters is survived by his parents, Barbara and Charlie Ray Waters of the home; a sister, Pamela Crocker and husband, Ricky, of Fountain; a brother, William "Buddy" Waters of the home; two nieces, Leslie Crocker Sutton and husband, Jonathan, of Bell Arthur and Jasmine Crocker of Fountain; aunts, Kay Norville and husband, Robert, of Falkland, Becky Lewis and husband, Danny, of Vanceboro and Martha Shackleford and husband, Linwood, of Hampton, Va.; cousins, Karen, Daniel and Tanner Vandiford, Jason and Roger Witherington, Lori Fleming and husband, Lester, Jenna and Michael, Tonya Sutton and friend, Ronnie Hewitt, Harmony and Raven, Timmy Williams and Amy Davis.
The family will receive friends at the Farmville Funeral Home tonight from 7 until 9 and other times at the home of Pamela and Ricky Crocker, 5130 Sharp Point Road, Fountain.
Evelyn Buck
WINTERVILLE — Mrs. Evelyn Grace Rice Buck, 77, died Monday, April 25, 2005. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Pinewood Memorial Park.
A native of Ayden, Mrs. Buck had been a resident of Winterville since 1945 and was employed by Winterville Machine Works for a number of years. She was a member of Winterville Free Will Baptist Church and the Silver Stream Council of Pocahontas.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, John D. "J.D." Buck; daughter, Lorraine Waters and her husband, Monroe, of Winterville; son, Carlton Buck of Winterville; four grandchildren, Sherri Churchill and her husband, Greg, of Winterville, Michelle Bowers and her husband, Preston, of Winterville, Lori Coleman and her husband, Scott, of Greenville and Cheryl Buck of Winterville; seven great-grandchildren, Shaela Churchill of Winterville, Sawyer Churchill of Winterville, Casey Bowers of Winterville, Tyler Buck of Winterville, Logan Waters of Greenville, Sarah Bowers of Winterville and Carlee Coleman of Greenville; and sister, Christine R. Elks of Greenville.

Wilbur R. Matthews
ROBERSONVILLE — Wilbur Ray Matthews, 79, of South Broads Street died Monday, April 25, 2005, at his residence.
The funeral service will be held today at 4 p.m. in the Robersonville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Cobb officiating. Interment will follow in the Robersonville Cemetery.
Mr. Matthews was raised in the Junior Order Children's Home Orphanage in Tiffin, Ohio. On Feb. 6, 1955, he married Gertie Oakley who survives.
Mr. Matthews, along with his wife, was the owner and operator of Mattco Florist. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran, having served in both the United States Army and Navy. Mr. Matthews was a member of Robersonville First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon.
Surviving, besides his wife, are his son, Michael Ray Matthews and wife, Brenda, of Greenville; sister, Hazel Matthews Archbell of Battleboro; step-grandchildren, Michael Bedsole of Greensboro and Katye Bedsole of Greenville.
The family will receive friends at the home. Biggs Funeral Home in Robersonville is serving the family.
Josephine Cherry
Mrs. Melba "Josephine" Cherry passed away peacefully at her home, Monday, April 25, 2005, surrounded by family and friends. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, N.C., conducted by Dr. William F. Ambrose. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, N.C.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Elwood Cherry Jr., Elmer Eugene Ingalls, Rayvon Dixon, Herman "Buster" Daniel, Randy Dixon, Ronnie Parrott, Gary Williams and James Albert Warren.
Mrs. Cherry was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 30, 1917. She was the daughter of the late James Alfred Cherry and Sudie Roberson Cherry. Mrs. Cherry was a homemaker, dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Washington High School Class of 1935, where she met her beloved husband, Norwood Cherry Sr., who preceded her in death on July 3, 1987.
Mrs. Cherry was a member of the Tranters Creek Church of Christ. She was a former member of the Pamlico Garden Club and the Washington Women's Club. When her health permitted, one could always find "Jo" working in her flowers, vegetable garden or cooking for her family, in which she found great joy.
Mrs. Cherry is survived by her son, Norwood Cherry Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Washington, N.C.; twin daughters, Joy Cherry-Pike and her husband, John, of Washington, N.C., and Josie Cherry-Jones and her husband, David, of Wilson. Her fondest memories were the birth of her grandchildren, Tiffany Sopher, and her husband, Matt, Nikki LaJaunie and her husband, Jarrod, Melinda Joy-Cherry Jones and her friend, Daniel Bailey, William Kyle Jones; great-grandchild, Carson Tucker LaJaunie; step-grandchildren, Tommy Pike, Greyson Keen and their children, Ashlyn Pike, Ty, Madison and Blaize Keen."Sister," fondly referred to by her siblings, is survived by a sister, Irma Warren of Old Ford; and a brother, Russell Cherry of Wichita, Kan. She is also survived by her canine companions, Little Bit, Woody, Zeus, Molly, Bleu and Luke.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Cherry was preceded in death by a sister, Earlene Alligood, and brothers, J.A., Delwood, Lee and Ashley Cherry.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Paul Funeral Home, Washington and other times at her home, 1305 Robersonville Road, Washington, N.C.

Pearl B. Harris
WILLIAMSTON — Mrs. Pearl Brannan Harris, 87, of U.S. Highway 17 died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Britthaven of Washington. She was the daughter of the late George W. and Lucy Nicholson Brannan. On January 20, 1935, she married Charlie Fisher Harris who preceded her in death in 1992.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Taylor Mills officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday and other times at the home of Jeff Harris.
Mrs. Harris is survived by sons, Charles T. Harris and wife, Jean, of Williamston and Mark Jeff Harris and wife, Pat; sister, Sudie Finch of Bailey; grandchildren, Lynn Harris Davis and husband, Tim, of Maplewood, Minn., Jill Harris Casey and husband, Jim, of Greenville, Cassie Elizabeth Harris of Williamston and Lane Katherine Harris of Williamston; great-grandchildren, Matthew Davis, Josh Davis, Andrew Davis, Tim Davis, James Thomas Casey, Shelby Casey, Harris Casey and Will Casey.

Doris B. Modlin
WILLIAMSTON — Mrs. Doris B. Modlin, 80, of Williamston passed away Tuesday at her residence. She is the daughter of the late Warren S. and Martha L. Barber of Jamesville. On Jan. 5, 1946, she married Church E. Modlin. Mrs. Modlin was a member of Maple Grove Christian Church. She loved to crochet, quilt and garden, and was one of the best cooks around. Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and she will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Biggs Funeral Home with Tony Varner, Adron Modlin and Kenneth Stalls officiating. Interment will be in the Jamesville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Biggs Funeral Home.
She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Church E. Modlin; daughters, Joan M. Stalls and husband, Kenneth, of Frederick, Md., and Janet M. Wainwright and husband, Al, of Greenville; a son, Church E. Modlin Jr. and wife, Linda, of Tarboro; grandchildren, Jonathan Stalls and wife, Kelly, of Richmond, Va., Bill and Mark Wainwright of Greenville and Holly and Victoria Modlin of Tarboro; great-granddaughter, Lauren Stalls of Richmond, Va.; and sisters Ella Mae Modlin of Jamesville and Lydia Matthew of Robersonville.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Katie Fine and Bertie Williams; and two brothers, Garland "Jake" Barber and Simon Barber.
