Letter: City Council hopeful wants write-in vote

Thursday, October 25, 2007

Citizens of Greenville District 5, we need a third choice in the race for the District 5 City Council seat. We need someone who is committed to serving all of the residents of District 5 and the city of Greenville.

This is why I have decided to step into the race as a write-in candidate.

My name is Richard A. Weir. I am 31 years old and a Pitt County native. I have lived in Greenville for about eight years now and I am very proud of the largest city in my home county. During my time in Greenville, I have been involved with the Democratic Party as a precinct chair and I have served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2005.

I believe very strongly in being involved with our local government and serving our friends and neighbors. My friends, I care about our city and the way that it is growing. I think that Greenville is becoming less family friendly in some areas. This is something that we must correct.

I also fear that places such as Fire Tower Road will eventually become nothing more than giant strip malls. I stand for smart, responsible growth in Greenville. I want to see stronger neighborhoods. I also support the creation of new parks and the expansion of the greenway.

We need progressive, concerned leadership in District 5. That will only happen if we have a third choice in this election.

Please, on Nov. 6, write in Richard Weir as your choice for the District 5 City Council seat. If you have any questions or concerns about my campaign, please feel free to write me via e-mail.
