Editorial: For president

Friday, October 17, 2008

On Nov. 4, North Carolina voters will head to the polls for the general election. The Daily Reflector will recommend candidates in races prior to that vote, and today focuses on the presidency.

For U.S. Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain, the campaign for the White House required an exhausting, grueling process spanning nearly two years. It necessitated an overwhelming investment of resources reflecting the high stakes and tremendous opportunity this election represents.

As Americans choose their next president, they should take careful measure of the candidates and determine which can chart the best course over the next four years. In doing so, American voters should conclude that Obama, the Democratic senator from Illinois, will be the leader of vision, intellect and temperament the nation needs.

Though style and flash always weigh heavily on presidential campaigns in the modern era, Americans look to the issues as they thoughtfully weigh the decision before them. And this year, Obama bests McCain on the most daunting challenges now facing the country.

Economic turbulence can be calmed through the sound fiscal policy Obama promotes. His tax plan moves the country away from the reckless budgets of the Bush administration and divides financial burden in a more equitable manner. McCain, conversely, would extend excessively large tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans passed at Bush's insistence in 2001, driving the nation further into debt.

On health care, Obama's plan would go further than McCain's proposal to provide coverage for the 47 million uninsured Americans by allowing them access to a federal system used by members of Congress. Independent reviews call it a more thorough and affordable plan.

On foreign policy, Obama wants to shift the military focus from Iraq to Afghanistan, a move that would ratchet up pressure on the al-Qaida leadership responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the Taliban forces that protect them. He argues that diplomatic negotiations with all nations foster a safer world, and that the country's strength lies not only in its military might but in its compassion toward those oppressed by tyrants.

Obama argues a more thoughtful approach to energy independence, one that invests in renewable energy sources and limits a reliance on fossil fuels in general and foreign oil in particular. And on a host of other issues — from ensuring the solvency of Social Security to the need for comprehensive, rational immigration reform — his positions represent the type of progressive leadership that can restore confidence in the leadership of the White House.

Obama has been dismissed by opponents as little more than an exemplary orator, a man with limited political experience who is unprepared for the challenges ahead. He has been the subject of blatant falsehoods about his religious background and attacked as a radical leftist with dangerous associates.

But Obama has responded by relentlessly seeking to raise the level of public discourse and by focusing on the path toward an America that lives up to its promise as the greatest, most prosperous nation in history. His potential for achieving that outweighs McCain's.

The United States needs a new start with leaders capable of bringing innovative solutions to the troubling challenges that face this nation. For those reasons, the country needs Barack Obama as its president.

All newspapers endorse candidates during presidential elections. This is not a new practice. Obviously this is the first election for which many of you have bothered to "tune in"!

It's an EDITORIAL! This isn't a news page! It's opinion. If reading other opinions different from your own makes your eyes bleed, you really shouldn't read the "Opinion Page".

To Leigh: I am not a DEADBEAT and I support Obama. I graduated from ECU with not 1 but 2 degrees and I have job! Obama wants to help those in need by taking away from people who abuse the system. I hope that one day in your life you need help and someone looks at you and says no DEADBEAT! OBAMA/BIDEN'08!

To those of you who will stop reading this paper because of who they endorse: you people are immature! What if your bosses fired you because of who you support? What if Food Lion refused to sell you groceries or Bob Barbour refused to sell you a car? It is fine you support McCain but don't be childish and be nasty to people who support Obama!

I will no longer be supporting The Daily Reflector. It is wrong that you are pushing voters to vote for a certain candidate. Educate people regarding the candidates true values/views and the public may actually vote for the more appropriate candidates. McCain/Palin have my support!

You hit it right on. Republicans across the country are finally getting it and expressing their fears of a John McCain presidency (Reagans' longtime advisor Ken Addleman and Colin Powell most recently). This country needs to change direction and Barack Obama is the right person because of his sound policy, his even temperament, his intelligence, etc. His wife Michelle would make one of the best first ladies we have had in some time because of her intelligence, poise, and heart.

One thing that many people overlook is the fact that the Senate and the House of Reps have most of the decision making ability in this country and both have been controlled by Democrats for the last 2 terms ... Why do we want to put one as the President?

Shouldn't the Daily Reflector Publisher at least acknowledge that (a) his son is employed by the Obama for President campaign, (b) is a lifelong Democrat.

Colin Powell's message of support today on "Meet the Press" eloquently outlined why Obama is the clear candidate of choice. Despite the increasing atmosphere of anti-intellectualism in our country now is the time for smart reasoned leadership. The fruits of the past 8 years have shown us how "Joe Six-Pack" governs.

Did anyone hear Hannity's radio show Friday? He was taking Obama support calls only. The Obama supporters were saying things like "I'm voting for him 'cause he'll send me a check." "People who make money can afford to give us money." DEADBEATS. Those are the people who want Obama to win. Not hardworking Americans.

I understand freedom of the press and all, but I've always thought the Daily Reflector had a biased approach to many news items. When a newspaper comes right out to support a candidate for public office, it confirms what I've been thinking for years. It also reminds me why I cancelled my subscription years ago.

Tiffany, you said, "In addition to McCain's anger issue..."...when in fact you didn't initially support any evidence of any anger problem. I was 8 years old during the Iran Hostage Crisis but I'm educated enough in History to know terrorism when I see it.. A Community Organizer? Really...We call them Social Planners. With BO in office, the American economy would get even worse, but we'd have the most delightful well organized community tea parties!

This is the first part of my response to Tiffany the other is below. You might need to seek some facts of your own. McCain’s first wife Carol was a divorced mother of two when she married McCain. At that time, McCain adopted those two children; one of which currently works for one of Cindy McCain’s companies. His marriage did fail, and he does admit that the failure of his first marriage was one of his deepest regrets.

Also keep in mind that he and second wife Cindy adopted a baby from India with health problems as well as continuing to take care of his adopted children from the first marriage. You can say that you don’t like the man, but you can’t say he is not compassionate. Also, several articles show that Carol McCain has remained on good terms with John McCain and still stands behind him stating he is the best man for president. If Carol McCain is not bashing him, why are you?

J. Dennis,
I think McCain said it best when he stated at the Rally, when one of his supporter's stood up and said Obama is a terrorist. McCain stated Obama is not a terrorist and he is a good man. Please read the facts, Obama was 8 years at the time the terrorist attempts/acts went on. In additon to McCain's anger issue; if he left his ex-wife when she was sick, what makes you think he is really concerned about the American people?

Newspapers all over the country are known either as "liberal" or "conservative." This is nothing new to any person who reads a paper. Do I agree with every article or position taken by a paper or magazine? Of course not. I can choose to vote my conscience. If this endorsement bothers you, then just vote your conscience. Freedom of the press is allowed, just as all of us have the freedom to make our choices. Isn't this a great country?

In the late 50's early 60's there was another politician who said I will bring change, his name was Fidel Castro. If Obama is elected you will see the most liberal voting senator attempt to bring as much socialism as he can to America. Be careful you do not get what you ask for.

Does it surprise anyone that moral beliefs and values were not mentioned in this editorial? Sadly Americans seem to be fueled by greed and economic gains rather than concentrating on moral issues and content of candidate character. Luckily there are still a few of us out there that "cling to their guns and religion" and will vote accordingly.

I thought the article was very impressive and stated the facts in which America should consider when casting their vote. I am personally afraid of the thought of John McCain becoming our next present because of his anger management issue. Leading on emotions can never be good,
that is why Bush felt the need for the war today.

The usual unbiased media we're used to seeing from The Daily 'Refractor'! I'm sure I'll spend money for this rag again. Whether I vote for Obama or McCain is MY decision and mine alone...I am quite aware of the issues and am more than capable to think for myself. But thank you, Daily Distorter for instructing us uneducated hillbilly voters of North Carolina on how to vote. What would we do without your guidance?...

I am disappointed that this newspaper would openly endorse one side over another. The news media continually feels that we need to know their opinion on issues, rather than simply presenting unbiased facts. People in the United States are smart enough to make their own decisions. For 10 years I subscribed to the Daily Reflector, but because you adamantly expressed YOUR opinion, my decision today is to cancel my subscription.
