Editorial: Debate amendment respectfully

4 Comments | Leave a Comment

In fewer than 100 days, North Carolina voters will head to the polls for the state’s primary election, an important moment in which the public will consider an amendment to the N.C. Constitution that would define marriage as being between one man and one woman. Competing interests on this issue are gearing up for an intense and personal debate that put the state on the front lines of America’s culture war.

While a passionate discussion of this amendment is encouraged and should help voters make an informed decision at the polls, North Carolina should recognize the need to act with civility as the debate unfolds. It will be difficult to maintain some degree of decorum given the emotions at the center of the issue, but this state can show its best side with respectful discourse in the days to come.

Same-sex marriage is one of the more polarizing issues facing the nation, one often employed as a wedge to divide people and increase voter turnout for particularly high profile elections. Recall the numerous states that debated same-sex marriage bans in advance of the 2004 presidential election as many Republican legislatures used popular referenda to pump up “get out the vote” drives.

It will be banned

It will be banned whether or not the amendment passes, because of existing state law.

This amendment will go further though. It will end every domestic partnership in the state that heterosexual couples have. It could end some protections unmarried straight couples have. The NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence is against this amendment because it could end domestic violence protections for any unmarried couple. They said similar language caused the state to have to let domestic violence offenders out of jail in Ohio.

For gay couples this forever prevents the possibility of civil unions. It could kick couples of each others health insurance, make hospital visitation harder or impossible, invalidate recognition of contracts between couples, and make inheritance more difficult.

No matter what ones feelings on marriage are, this amendment goes a lot further, and will hurt straight and gay couples alike. Even Republican and Tea Party supported Congresswomen Renee Ellmers said she's going to vote against this amendment because it just goes too far.

Men marrying women and women

Men marrying women and women marrying men has got us this far. I do not see how men marrying men and women marrying women would have gotten us past one generation. The fact that we are even considering this farce shows the moral depravity of this country.

Marriage vs Civil Unions

Definitions change with the era, in biblical times men had many wives. Mormons did until recently. But at the core this is a money issue. Contracts can be made concerning inheritance rights and hospital visitation, but this battle centers on third party payments such as Social Security and employee benefits. This will be a true test of 'states' rights', as well as the 'voice of the people'.

Stupid laws

Well I really see this as a very simple issue. If we are "protecting marriage" then we also need to ban divorces. They destroy the sanctity of marriage as well. Lets not forget outlawing affairs and taking a serious look at outlawing sex outside of marriage. All these things are just destroying the sanctity of marriage.

Of course the more logical method is for the government to stay out of peoples personal lives and focus on real issues. Like maybe the job crisis?
