In the aftermath of a tragic 2009 shooting that claimed the lives of two men in downtown Greenville, the City Council — working at the behest of concerned citizens — instructed law enforcement to adopt a more intensive approach to policing that area. In recent days, a dispute emerged between the outgoing police chief and city officials over the effectiveness of those efforts and how best to proceed.
Such a review of law enforcement policies is long overdue as many in the community have correctly questioned the value of devoting so much time and energy toward that one city sector. Nurturing a vibrant, thriving and safe downtown will require cooperation and the implementation of well researched, proven strategies rather than hasty reactions.
When a drive-by shooting killed two innocent bystanders in downtown Greenville nearly three years ago, residents demanded action. The outrage at a rising tide of lawlessness led to a series of meetings, some in the public view and some regrettably behind closed doors, and a search for solutions to improve public safety in the so-called Center City area.

The vision
The vision downtown is "bully" cops trying to control downtown. There is no plan. There is no vision. It's just how many tickets can the city police write for resisting an officer. God forbid if anyone questions their authority. I have been in many downtown college towns and don't see the attitude or problems like we have in Greenville. Bottom line is respect. Police do not have respect for people downtown and in turn the people have no respect for the police. Respect is something you ear and is not something that just exist. And to the bar owners....stop the happy hour cheap drinks and raise your prices. Time for you to clean up your act or I vote to "shut the bars down". Don't tell me it can't happen. It has happen other places; Fayetteville , NC. Not confortable to go to Winslow's or Starlight Cafe. You should be standing on somebody's head to change this mess! Greenville is not unique, Greenville just doesn't have a clue.
Visions of bigfoot
Great point about the vision, jack1919. Seems to me that all these visions revolve around downtown and the greatness we will see after spending zillions of taxpayer dollars. Do these seers of the future ever look for visions away from the bars? Have they been drinking when these visions are seen? Are these visions part of a hangover?
yada,yada,yada
"But the city should proceed logically by first hiring a new chief and then involving all stakeholders in the discussion, including bar owners who have resisted any imposition on their business. Greenville finds itself at a crossroads and cannot proceed without all involved pulling in a common direction."
Where is the VISION- this talk talk talk has gotten us nowhere
yes , lets find a new chief, give him two years to get familiar with the situation and find out we hired another dud.
Can we call Leo Jenkins from his grave for some VISION
