Thousands of people who use a certain section of Memorial Drive to traverse Greenville have routinely done so without knowing they were passing an encampment of homeless citizens. The combination of tents and tarps that provide makeshift shelter for a number of people is hidden from view by a grove of tall pines and other vegetation.
It is not uncommon for those members of society without access to adequate protection from the elements to find inconspicuous places to dwell. Some have taken shelter in this area known as “tent city” for years on end. Their circumstances may vary but their basic needs are the same. As more and more compassionate hands reach out to those in such dire situations, however, awareness of their plight begins to rise — as does the possibility of them finding a path to a safer and warmer living standard.
A recent display of such outstretched hands came in the form of a Super Bowl party. The novel idea may have found more participation among the homeless populations of larger cities across the nation, but its purpose for providing assistance and raising awareness was accomplished in Greenville as well.

There, but for the grace of God, go I
I did not know we had a tent city right here in Greenville. Before Christmas, I attended a reunion party with 3 bands and a cover charge, with all proceeds going to the Greenville homeless shelter. Bless those whose efforts are on behalf of those less fortunate. Jesus implored us to take care of the poor, it is truly doing the work of Christ here on Earth.
much ado about very little
How many homeless were there- 2 ? from the earlier article there were not many.
I do not know what the Daily Reflector's facination is with the small group of people.
Surely there has to be other things that are more relevent to write about.
These people have violated every Pitt County health ordinance there is from unsanitary cooking to going to the bathroom in the woods consistently.
I bet if this was a hispanic encampment the authorities would be all over them like stink on flys- but then again it would not be hispanics- they would have found a way to find work and live in a house.
Why is the daily reflector enabling these people- they should be removed for health reasons
Whats good for a commercial restraurant is good for these people- inspect the premises and get them out of the unsanitary environment. Our County Health department is once again letting us down.
