What appears to be a setback for Gov. Beverly Perude could prove to be a great benefit to the state when the N.C. General Assembly returns to work next month. Her decision to decline a re-election bid leaves her free to fight for education funding and comprehensive tax reform without the repercussions of electoral rejection in November’s general election.

Were it only so that she would have willing allies in that fight, one that will see her push for increased appropriation for public schools in light of last year’s cuts. That issue — and the need for a more streamlined, modernized tax code — are top issues facing North Carolina, and Perdue can advance the cause of both before she departs public office in one year’s time.

Though whispers have swirled around her for months, the governor made it official last week when she announced her intention to step down after only one term in office. The surprise move left potential Democratic nominees scrambling to gauge their electoral prospects and threw a significant wrench into the plans of former Charlotte Mayor and likely Republican nominee Pat McCrory.

Elected and accountable school boards? Seriously? Have you seen Pitt County lately? How about Wake? We need state agencies to oversee local governments.

Give back

She just needs to give back all the money she took from the educational lottery. Then there will be no need to increase taxes on anything or anyone.

she is a very lame duck

admit it

her tenure has been an absolute Disaster

The primary question facing public schoole is how best to fund them. And then you talk of tax reform which is liberal speak for raising taxes in a state with already high taxes and unemployment. A better way to fund schools would be to close the NC dept. of education, let the paper shufflers and pencil pushers in Raleigh go and use those funds for educatiion.
It's high time we as citizens understand that beaurocrats don't solve problems, they only siphon off resources that could be better spent elsewhere: like the classroom. I challenge anyone to name one thing that the state or federal department of education has done to make our schools better. You can't, because it has never been done. It's time to do away with this money grubbing arm of government and return control of schools to elected, accountable school boards.
