For more than seven years, Greenville City Manager Wayne Bowers helped guide this community through the challenges of an exploding population and an economic recession that forced difficult choices on elected officials. His work during that time was never flashy, but Bowers brought a modest professionalism to the table that served the city well.
His unexpected resignation, announced at the start of the City Council’s annual planning session, will leave vacant two of the most important and visible appointed positions in Greenville. Finding Bowers’ replacement will require a time-consuming and comprehensive search, one that identifies an experienced candidate who values citizen engagement and transparency in government.
One week after Greenville Police Chief William Anderson tendered his resignation to accept the same position in Asheville, the city manager surprised with his own resignation, effective March 1. Bowers came to the city in 2004, taking over for Marvin Davis when Davis accepted the council’s decision to make him a deputy manager.

Pick Someone
Just pick someone from Greenville! Really?! Who in the City of Greenville has ever run a business the size of Greenville? Who has the experience in Greenville dealing with politics? I am sorry you are totally wrong!!! The City of Greenville must find someone who has experience in working in a college town the size of Greenville. Trying to balance the cities needs and the needs of a growing major university is something that cannot be taken lightly. Greenville is ready to explode at its' seams, you need someone who is progressive in thinking and management who can guide the city to continually grow and prosper.
Bowers was terrible!!! Really?! Greenville continued to grow during the economic recession. It may have slowed but it continued to grow. City revenues never decreased like other cities. Mr. Bowers has done a terrific service for the citizens of Greenville and he should be treated as such!
I say good riddance to both
Now let's find some local talent who understands our unique set of problems and is willing to make tough fiscal choices and a police cheif who will really reduce crime. Let's leave the outsiders, progressives whom you like, the community activists out in the cold where they belong. I find it hard to believe that with a population of more than 80,000 people, there are no qualified candidates for these jobs here in our fair city.
