Editorial: Traffic laws can prevent tragedies

The thunderstorm that pushed across Pitt County on Thursday brought spells of heavy rainfall, making the morning commute for local drivers a bit more treacherous. While all motorists used their wipers for a clear view, few switched on their headlights as mandated by state law, a requirement intended to make vehicles more visible in inclement weather.

That represents one casual bit of illegal behavior repeated incessantly on area roadways, but another example of habits that can endanger others and contribute to accidents could prove responsible for a fatality. Drivers in eastern North Carolina should do better by one another by adhering to proper practices, just as law enforcement should strive to improve road safety whenever they can.

Tragedy visited Pitt County on Tuesday when a truck moving north on N.C. 43 had its trailer unhinge and collide with an SUV traveling south. Lisa Langemann, a 27-year-old teacher at Bethel Elementary School, was killed in the accident, and her two daughters in the car were injured. The ensuing investigation found that the trailer was homemade and lacked the safety cables and chains required by state law. The other driver has been charged in Langemann's death.

In closing....

We know that a "common sense" law would make a difference. Please know that we have been warning about this for over 8 years. I have the documentation to prove it.

Why does it have to cost me my home, my credit to support our efforts if we are right? The solution is not that hard and you don't have to spend millions and millions to fix the problem.

The problem is the Insurance Companies, Political Leaders and the Companies have simply outspent our cause because of profit.

This is not the way it should be.

This just happend....we have a nationwide issue...

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the trailer came unhitched Monday afternoon on U.S. 34, hitting an oncoming car and killing one person just northwest of the Lincoln Airport. The victim’s name was not immediately released.

Two other people were taken to BryanLGH Medical Center West after the crash. Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said she did not know the conditions of those two people.

U.S. 34 remained closed in the area nearly two hours later as the State Patrol investigated and cleaned up the scene.

Wake Up!!

This is a clear example of "Negligence" Please note that this trailer was a "Homemade Trailer" We also know that this trailer was NEVER INSPECTED! While the code is very clear on trailers over 3,000 GVWR the manufactures have figured out that if they make them just under 3,000 GVWR "Anything Goes"!!!

Our Henrico Police conducted an Safety Audit this weekend...and at least 70% of all the trailers inspected had one safety violation!!

The reason nobody is pulling over these trailers is any violations are considered "Secondary" violations. They can't pull you over unless you are speeding, running a stop sign and so on.

Under current law...your law does not specifically say a Violation of Safety Chains is primary!!! So if you are not doing anything wrong...they can't pull you over!!.

Go to www.dangeroustrailers.org and see what we have been trying to do for over 8 years!! We did get a law passed in Virginia Senate Bill 646!! it passed uncontested...nobody in your state even called us back.

Pitt County Drivers

No it is obvious that Pitt County Drivers get their licenses out of Cracker Jack boxes. I have never seen so many idiot drivers in my life. Obviously STOP signs don't mean anything to anyone nor do red lights. I see more near misses here than I have ever seen in a big city. My other question is: Do the cars out here not come with signals?? People we can not read your mind and we do not know which way you are going so please use them! If the people here just treated others how they would like to be treated we may not have so many accidents or other violence. This is the rudest all about "ME" town in North Carolina. There is no South Hospitality here.
