Letter: 'Black out' plan a break from Pirate purple

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

I see where there will be a “black out” at the ECU-Virginia Tech football clash on Nov. 5.

This game will be nationally televised on ESPN and will provide great exposure for our beloved university.

So what is a black out? Why, it asks all ECU fans to wear black at the game. Black as in the color (some athletic department officials have told me black is a neutral color) of the jerseys some of our athletic teams wear.

And all these years I thought our school colors were purple and gold. Perhaps following the cultural fashion trends of the moment are more important than tradition.

I'll be at the game ... in purple and gold.

How could a 'pirate out' even remotely sound like a good idea? What is the purpose of having everyone dress like pirates? I can understand covering one eye with a patch to watch the product on the field. On second thought, maybe two eye patches will be more appropriate.

Actually it is both a 'Pirate Out' and a 'Black Out'. It has been known for a couple of months. The pirate out started first and then the black out came.

It's not "black out"...it's "pirate out". You must be ECU alum or (like many fans) didn't graduate from ECU at all. You don't even know what we are doing?!

It's not "black out"...it's "pirate out". They are trying to encourage people to dress like pirates, not in black. Where in the world did you get your information. If it is bc you heard someone saying asking people if they are going to "pirate out" or "black out"... it's meant as sarcasm that people are blacking out if they don't dress as a pirate. We don't want anyone wearing black.

I believe you and the turkeys should be wearing black since you are in mourning for the loss you received last year!

Who cares? The only blackout ECU should hope for is that the scoreboard section displaying VT's point total blacks out. Then again maybe you should wear black. That is the typical color worn at a funeral.
