Letter: Local, state politics beg questions of ethics

Wednesday, November 04, 2009

Where have all our ethics gone? You may sing that refrain to the folk song, “Where have all the flowers gone.” Because, after watching the State Board of Election hearings, and watching the former governor of North Carolina twist and turn with every question about his personal house repairs and car non-payments coming out of campaign funds, as well as possible illegal donations being given for possible favors, it is clear that ethics have certainly moved out of Raleigh.

Then I see that The Daily Reflector makes the unbelievably questionable move of endorsing a local candidate for City Council who has strong work and marriage ties with the paper. After a half-hearted column by the paper's editor justifying this ill-advised move (Nov. 1), I surmise that the governor's smooth-talking excuses have moved down N.C. 264 100 miles or so to Greenville.

The former governor's ethics should be beyond reproach, yet during the hearings the word “ethical” never surfaced. The same can be said about The Daily Reflector.

As the self-proclaimed holder of everything sacred about journalism in Pitt County, it falls right off its ethics bandwagon with no mention made of the journalistic ethics of endorsing an admitted nepotistic candidate.

Apparently somewhere along the way, we have lost our ethical bearings, especially so with some of our supposedly leading organizations and leaders.

We have smart individuals with their law degrees stating that, well, it's not illegal what the governor may have done. We have experienced editors saying, “We feel the paper serves a purpose by making these choices, informed ones.” Sadly, these comments are all very weak and suspect from an ethical perspective.

Where have all our ethics gone? Do not ask the former governor or The Daily Reflector.

I totally agree with Terry. I was hoping being the Reflector was bought by someone else that they would stop being so biased but obviously that is not the case. Media should be fair and balanced.

I agree with terry but more so I have an intense dislike for whimps like Bob who sling words behind anonymous postings.
He or she is a spineless, coward human being who either doesn't have the intelligence to write a letter refuting Mr. Boardman or who has absolutely no idea what he or she is talking about.
These types of individuals have the same ethical make-up as the former governor .
terry's point is validated with Bob's comment.

You all miss the point

I really do not care about the candidates
in ten years they will be like the candidates 10 years ago- gone

You all are too narrow minded to see that its a conflict of interest issue- Blackburn/Stearns who cares

but these comments just show how small minded some people are in this town

Sorry Mr. Boardman, but who the Reflector endorsed had no bearing on my vote. I don't imagine it made much differance in many peoples minds either.

So the Reflector plays favorites? If they did, they would have never printed this trash of a letter. Wouldn't mention the candidates name for fear of of what? I enjoy reading your rants, but better have your own house in order before slinging mud.

I Agree

i agree with both statements. That's why I have not purchased a Daily Reflector paper in years. Why when I can read it online for free? Advertisers pay attention. Just how many subscriptions are there anyway?

The lack of ethics by this newspaper is part of the liberal take over of newspapers nationwide and is responsible for subscriptions being way down. Newspapwers run by libs are going bankrupt nationwide. I for one am glad to see that.
