Letter: Poor grammar unacceptable

Thursday, November 05, 2009

While it has become apparent to me that the Reflector does not view grammar as an integral (that means important) part of journalistic style, it is to some of us who have to struggle through the grammatical and spelling errors of the Reflector to get local news.

In your Oct. 31 article regarding the South Central Falcons, you wrote, “(Head Coach Walt) Davis doesn't know if he wouldn't have went with the same choice.”

Proper grammar of this sentence should have been, “Davis doesn't know if he would have gone with the same choice.” In the next series of quotes after this sentence, the coach himself is quoted, a quote in which he himself uses correct grammar.

If Davis did make the preceding quote using “went,” and it was not a summation by yourself of his thoughts regarding his choice of plays, then it should have been surrounded with quotation marks. It was not.

It seems the Reflector's disregard for the English language is virulent, right through to the sports department. The commonality (that means something that happens as a standard behavior) of this newspaper's misspellings and poor grammar, which it feels is acceptable practice, is a good argument for allowing it — along with other flagging, indifferent-to-standards, poorly managed newspapers — to fail. In a time of concern about trees and increased landfills, that might be a good thing.

And here I had to go and misspell 'speech.' Rather kills a good point, doesn't it? I plead fatigue - after working all night, it's time for bed!

"give the poor fella's speach a brake"? As in, put a stop to it? Sure wish we could! The DR encourages people to donate papers to Pitt County Schools for use in classrooms. Surely our children deserve to learn how to write, not how not to. Yes, I know, dangling particple. Think anyone will notice?

Spanglish. Ebonics. Southern alleged "English". HA! That's a low bar to cross. Give the poor fella's speech a brake-- he's geographically handicapped; practically aphasic even. Exit stage left.

I'd hate to lead an exisitence where all I had to do was sit around and proofread the newspaper. THEN, take the time to write about it! Get a hobby!

with as many errors they have, i strongly believe that they do not employ an editor. they first post the article on line and wait for the corrections to come by way of the comment sections, then make the changes before it goes to print. free labor.

I think that Ms Ryan was on target and appropriately showed her disgust with the DR.
The manner was fine, Ms. Ryan and keep writing the letters just the way you did.
As far as the fool that wrote it
"turned me off", who the devil cares about that person. Probably an arrogant individual who could not write a decent letter to the editor given their nose is too high in the air.

you made a good point but the manner in which you express yourself turned me off.
You need to lighten up!

I guess you do not care if the plumber gets your leaking faucet fixed 100%
( drip ,drip) or the mechanic get your car's oil leak 100% - you would be the first to complain - drip, drip
Of course, the DR should get the spelling 100% correct- ITS THEIR JOB!!!!
Al belongs to the newly minted crowd that believes sloppy is OK in almost everything one does...sad...

The Reflector should be grammatically correct 99.9% of the time. I make mistakes just like everyone does, but if your job involves the written word then get it right. I think back to a front page headline a couple of years ago that read "Water Main Busts". That's classic Reflector.

Wow, I guess everybody needs something to complain about...
What are you, an English teacher? You could have made the same point, while being lighter on the vitriol.
I suppose if you had to fill the same amount of column inches per day as the Reflector, it would be spotlessly grammatically correct? Did I phrase that correctly?
